Campbell's Field: 3 Months After, 2015

A baseball sized hole punched into a wall of the Press Box. The date above the hole reads: 9/13/2015, the day the Riversharks baseball club closed.

SEPTEMBER, 13TH 2015 THE RIVERSHARKS BASEBALL CLUB CLOSED DOWN. THEIR HOME STADIUM, CAMPBELL’S FIELD, WAS JUST 15 YEARS OLD. BUILT BY MY FATHER, STEVE SHILLING, IN 2001 IT WAS HIS LIFE’S DREAM TO SEE BASEBALL COME TO CAMDEN. I REMEMBER BEING ABLE TO TAKE PART AS AN ENTHUSIASTIC OBSERVER IN A NUMBER OF GAMES DURING THE FIRST TWO SEASONS. THAT, FOR THE MOST PART, CHANGED WHEN MY FATHER PASSED AWAY FROM GLIOBLASTOMA MULTIFORME (GBM), AN AGGRESSIVE FORM OF BRAIN CANCER WHICH, AT THE TIME WAS INOPERABLE. HE PASSED JUST BEFORE BEING ABLE TO SEE THE 2003 SEASON BEGIN. I, AS WELL AS MY SISTER THREW OUT THE OPENING PITCH(ES) FOR THE INAUGURAL GAME.

IT IS NOW THE BETTER PORTION OF 12 YEARS LATER AND THE BASEBALL CLUB, ALONG WITH THE STADIUM HAVE CLOSED DOWN. THERE IS STILL SOME HOPE FOR THE STADIUM, AS RUTGERS HAS A CAMPUS NEARBY WHICH USES THE FIELD FOR PRACTICE. WITH MY UNCERTAINTY AS TO WHAT WOULD BECOME OF THE STADIUM IN THE MONTHS AND YEARS TO COME I PACKED UP SOME CAMERAS, CONTACTED EVERYONE I KNEW WHO MAY IN TURN HAVE KNOWN SOMEONE WHO COULD HAVE GRANTED ME ACCESS TO THE PROPERTY, AND WENT ABOUT DOCUMENTING WHAT I COULD. THE FOLLOWING IS A SAMPLE OF IMAGES CREATED DURING THE DAY OF MY VISIT.
